Chilli Poppers - by 2TA
Now for those that are about as addicted to chilli poppers as I am, you'll be as excited as i was when I spotted a recipe on the latest Fresh Living Mag on how to make your own.
I haven't actually made them yet - but I bought the ingredients yesterday and will be making them this evening. I will let you know how it goes.
For now - here's the recipe:
(it even says "a perfect snack with a frozen margarita or a cold beer" - ha ha!)
16 Jalapeno chillies, pickled
1/2 tub (100g) low fat cream cheese
1/3 cup (80ml) grated cheddar
1 tsp (5ml) crushed garlic
Seasoned flour, for dusting
2 extra large eggs, beaten
2 cups (500ml) breadcrumbs
veg oil for deep frying
Cut a slit down the length of each chilli. Remove seeds using the back of a teaspoon.
Mix cream cheese, cheddar and garlic paste together.
Spoon cream cheese mixture into chilli cavities.
Freeze chillies for 30 minutes.
Dust each chilli with a little flour, dip into egg and roll in breadcrumbs to coat.
Heat 4cm oil in a deep saucepan.
Fry chillis until golden and drain on paper towel.
Serve immediately.
Serves 4 :)

Re: Chilli Poppers - by 2TA
Ahhhh OK so now I know. Sounds great actually, apart from it being JALAPENOS! My taste buds don't really go well with spicy stuff, but if you take out the seeds and given that they are pickled, does it still burn your mouth?
Re: Chilli Poppers - by 2TA
Mila, you can buy them whole - the make is Goldcrest. They're in the isle with the gerkhins, pickled onions, olives etc... quite close to the fruit and veg section in the KC pick n pay :)
Ronette, I promise you, they're not so burny. The cheese calms the 'bite' a bit. Ya there's a little burn but nothing too hectic. I'm not a chilli person but I just love these.

GUYS, THEY WERE AMAZING! I honestly am so impressed with how they turned out. Didn't expect them to look so 'restaurant' type :) and they did!
they were divine! I mixed up a little mayo, chopped onion, tomato and gerkhin and we dunked them into there.
DEFINITELY worth making them!!!!
ps. I did however, miss the frozen margaritas to go with it!!!!

I am forever thankful. I've been bragging about them so much & told T that you have the recipe, so I've now been summoned to make them, if yours turned out well.
I'm not sure that I've seen picked jalapenos here before, but then again, I haven't really looked for them on the shelves. Just always bought fresh ones. Will have to look.

Re: Chilli Poppers - by 2TA
another way to do them is wrap them in phyllo pastry and then deepfry.. Also for a yummy dip finely chop a small onion, tomato and handful of coriander. mix about a cup of plain yoghurt and 2 tablespoons of creamy (woolies french) mayo adda bit of water to make a thinner consistency then mix in the tomatoes onions and coriander and some salt and pepper nd a bit of paprika its sooooo yum!
Re: Chilli Poppers - by 2TA
Bernie - I can't handle the zinger burger either but I can handle the poppers - so seriously, do yourself the favour and TRY THEM!
Ha ha V, best you get cracking and make them for T :)
Thanks Jan, that dip sounds yummy!

We use Peppadews. Fill them up with cottage cheese and sprinkle biltong powder on top or also dip them and deep fry. Very nice. Think I am going to try it with the jalapeno's.

Wow, this post sounds better and better. I can't handle the zinger burger either Bernie, neither the Nandos burgers I always choose the lemon & herb one and then it's just border line with burning my mouth. I like spicy stuff but really can't go too high up on the scale haha!
V, if you make them will you save one for me?

FINALLY!!!! Someone that understands!! Even the lemon&herb Nandos has a bite to it (and is also just borderline for me!) - no one believes me!

Of course I'll save you one Ronette. But that's if I can find pickled jalapenos first! Couldn't find them in the supermarket this morning. I know that I could make them, but I wanted to just do it easily.
Oh wow - biltong powder - think I'll give that a go!Rose-Anne wrote:Fill them up with cottage cheese and sprinkle biltong powder on top or also dip them and deep fry.

I don't do Nando's, precisely for this reason! And I've never had more than a tiny bite out of a zinger. I love sweet, mild curry, but that's it, nothing hot.Bernie (Taits mom) wrote:Ronette wrote:I can't handle the zinger burger either Bernie, neither the Nandos burgers I always choose the lemon & herb one and then it's just border line with burning my mouth. Goldcrest makes the pickled jalepenos... they're small which is a bit annoying trying to stuff them but they're DIVINE nonetheless :)
